Discover the hidden treasures of Lake Saimaa

Located in the South Karelia and South Savo provinces, the Saimaa UNESCO Global Geopark takes the traveller on an adventure into the origin story of the pure lake landscape. Formed from fragile bedrock, Saimaa emerged from the ancient sea more than 1 900 million years ago and today the landscape is dominated by clear waters and lush forests. In addition to ancient beaches and prehistoric rock paintings, Saimaa has a cute Saimaa ringed seal and the Vuoksi, broken by the mighty waters of the last Ice Age.

The heart of lake nature

Saimaa Geopark offers tourists a unique opportunity to discover ancient rock paintings, meandering waterways, beautiful lake landscapes and the diversity of Saimaa's lake nature.
