A Landscape Created by Water
Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark, encompassing six municipalities, extends from the legendary terrain of the First Salpausselkä ridge in Lahti to the southern part of the vast Lake Päijänne, from where the capital region gets its drinking water. Layered by ancient glacial rivers at the edge of the continental ice sheet, the forest-covered Salpausselkä ridges run across the region and are at their most spectacular here. They are a reminder of the cold climate period at the end of the last Ice Age, when the retreat of the continental ice sheet’s edge came to a halt. They form a unique entity in the Salpausselkä Geopark, together with outcrops of ancient bedrock, hundreds of lakes and narrow eskers. There is also something particularly valuable underground: the thick gravels and sands of Salpausselkä hide within vast reserves of pure groundwater. Come and fall in love with the landscape created by water!
