Impact Crater Lake UNESCO Global Geopark is located in the heart of the South Ostrobothnia Lake District. Its most prominent attraction, Lappajärvi, is known as the largest crater lake in Europe.  Lappajärvi was formed by a crater created by a meteorite that hit the earth at cosmic speed. The meteorite caused great destruction, wiping out all life over an area of several hundred kilometres, and was itself destroyed in the explosion. The traces left by the meteorite can still be seen today in Impact Crater Lake Geopark area, revealing the remarkable scale of the ancient catastrophe millions of years later.
